Europe Must Emerge as a Geopolitical Power Now: Macron

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, the French president urges long-term military strategy, reassessment of nuclear deterrence, and a stronger European security architecture amid Russia concerns

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for Europe to transform itself into a strong geopolitical power, urging the continent to adopt a long-term strategic vision to safeguard its security and interests.

Speaking on Friday at the Munich Security Conference, Macron emphasized that Europe must develop deep-strike military capabilities and reassess the potential role of France’s nuclear deterrence within a future European security framework. The remarks were reported by Reuters.

Rejecting claims that Europe is in decline, Macron argued that disinformation campaigns and the misuse of social media are undermining Western democracies. He said it is both legitimate and necessary for Europe to take decisive steps to counter such threats.

“This is the right time to be courageous. This is the time to build a stronger Europe,” Macron stated, adding that becoming a geopolitical power is not something that has traditionally defined Europe, but it is now essential.

He warned that even if a settlement is reached in the Ukraine war, Europe will continue to face an aggressive Russia. Accepting Moscow’s demands or settling for short-term compromises that fail to address underlying issues would be a mistake, he said.

Macron further noted that Europe’s current security structure was largely shaped during the Cold War and may no longer be adequate in today’s geopolitical environment. He called for a reconfiguration of the continent’s security architecture, including a renewed debate on nuclear deterrence.

According to Macron, preliminary discussions have already begun with leaders from Germany and the United Kingdom. Broader consultations at the European level are expected to follow in the coming weeks. He also indicated that he would soon deliver a more detailed address outlining France’s vision for the role of its nuclear deterrent in Europe’s future security strategy.
