At least 10 people, including the suspected attacker, were killed in a shooting at a high school in Tumbler Ridge, a remote community in northeastern British Columbia, Canadian police said on Tuesday.
According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), six bodies were recovered from inside the high school. Two more were found at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the incident. Another victim died while being transported to hospital.
Police said the suspected gunwoman was also found dead at the scene and is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities added that they do not believe any other suspects were involved.
In a public alert issued by British Columbia authorities, the suspect was described as a woman with brown hair who was wearing female clothing at the time of the attack.
Police Superintendent Ken Floyd told a news conference that officers encountered multiple casualties upon arrival. “The scene has now been secured,” he said, adding that investigators are working to determine the type of weapon used and the motive behind the attack.
Approximately 25 people were injured in the shooting and were taken to local health facilities for treatment.
Tumbler Ridge, located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, has a population of about 2,400 people and lies roughly 1,155 kilometers northeast of Vancouver.
British Columbia’s Minister of Public Safety, Nina Krieger, said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that her thoughts were with the people of Tumbler Ridge. She added that she had spoken with the mayor and local MLA and that the province stands ready to provide any additional support needed.
