Bangladesh Times Journalists Allegedly Detained During Office Hours

Journalist bodies express alarm over claims that individuals posing as security personnel surrounded the newsroom and detained reporters amid pre-election tensions

Dhaka:
Serious concerns have emerged over press freedom in Bangladesh following allegations that journalists of Bangladesh Times were detained from their office during working hours by individuals identifying themselves as members of the armed forces.
According to claims made on social media by Sabbir, the Mobile Journalism Editor-in-Chief of Bangladesh Times, unidentified personnel entered the newspaper’s office in the evening and surrounded journalists who were on duty. He alleged that several reporters were taken away after the individuals introduced themselves as army members.
Describing the incident as deeply alarming, Sabbir said the action appeared to be a direct attack on independent journalism, particularly at a sensitive time ahead of the national election. He warned that such incidents could create fear among media professionals and restrict the free flow of information.
The alleged incident has drawn strong reactions from journalist unions and media rights organizations, who expressed grave concern and condemned the reported actions. They said any form of intimidation, detention, or interference in newsroom operations poses a serious threat to press freedom and democratic values.
Media organizations have urged the authorities to clarify the situation immediately, ensure the safety of journalists, and take urgent steps to prevent any recurrence of such incidents. They also called for transparency and accountability regarding the identity and authority of those involved.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the authorities regarding the allegations. Further details are awaited.
