Tk 10 Crore Extortion Allegations Against Nahid Islam

Arrested ‘July Movement’ activist Surbhi claims senior party figures shared Tk 50 crore in an organised extortion network

An activist identified as Surbhi, recently arrested in connection with a Tk 50 crore extortion case, has alleged that National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Nahid Islam received Tk 10 crore as his share of the extorted money.
Speaking to journalists, Surbhi claimed that Nahid Islam visited him after his release from jail not out of political sympathy, but because of the money involved. According to Surbhi, the visit was linked to the alleged receipt of Tk 10 crore rather than solidarity with a fellow activist, raising questions about what he described as publicity-driven politics under the guise of empathy.
Surbhi further alleged that several central-level leaders of the National Student Power (NSP), including its Gazipur convener, also received Tk 10 crore each. He claimed the total amount—Tk 50 crore—was distributed among multiple individuals as part of a coordinated extortion network where financial gain, not ideology, was the primary motive.
The allegations have triggered intense discussion in political and social circles. Critics argue that the most troubling aspect of the claims is the alleged use of narratives such as “movement,” “struggle,” and “repression” as shields to justify or conceal an extortion-based political economy.
So far, most of the individuals named in the allegations have not issued detailed public responses. Their silence has raised further questions, including the source of such a large sum of money, whether others within the organisation were aware of the alleged activities, and whether the silence reflects caution or complicity.
Political analysts note that while corruption allegations are not new in politics, claims of large-scale extortion hidden behind revolutionary rhetoric add a new and troubling dimension. Observers also point out that false accusations are often met with swift rebuttals, while silence can sometimes indicate an attempt to buy time.
Ultimately, the court will determine the legal truth of the matter. However, even before judicial proceedings conclude, the controversy has already caused visible damage in what many describe as the “court of political morality.” If the allegations prove true, they would point not only to individual wrongdoing but to a broader culture of extortion-driven politics. If proven false, questions will remain about how Surbhi gained the confidence to make such serious claims involving prominent political figures.
Regardless of the outcome, one consequence is already clear: public trust is the biggest casualty in a political game allegedly involving tens of crores of taka.
