Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former ruler Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed in a shooting, according to multiple media reports. However, conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the location and circumstances of his death. The British broadcaster BBC reported the development citing Libyan sources.
Saif al-Islam’s lawyer told the media that a four-member commando unit carried out the attack at his residence in the city of Zintan. According to the lawyer, the assailants conducted a swift operation and fled the scene immediately after the shooting. The head of Saif al-Islam’s political party also confirmed his death on Tuesday, citing the Libyan News Agency.
So far, no armed group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Libyan authorities said details surrounding the incident remain unclear and an investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, Saif al-Islam’s sister made a contradictory claim during an interview on Libyan television, stating that he was killed near the Algerian border, not in Zintan. She alleged that the incident occurred while he was traveling in a border area but did not provide evidence to support her claim.
Saif al-Islam, 53, was once considered the likely successor to his father and a key political figure in Libya. Following the 2011 uprising that led to the fall of the Gaddafi regime, he was detained for nearly six years by a militia group in Zintan.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) had sought his prosecution on charges of crimes against humanity related to the violent suppression of protests. In 2015, a court in Tripoli sentenced him to death in absentia. He was later released under a general amnesty law enacted by authorities in eastern Libya.
Since the collapse of Muammar Gaddafi’s government, Libya has remained deeply divided, with rival administrations and armed factions controlling different parts of the country. During his father’s rule, Saif al-Islam played an influential informal role and was instrumental in negotiations that led Libya to abandon its nuclear weapons program and secure the lifting of international sanctions.
