A 23-year-old man was burned to death while sleeping inside a garage in Narsingdi district of Bangladesh late Friday night, in what his family has described as a “planned murder.”
The victim was identified as Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, son of Khokan Chandra Bhowmik, a resident of Lakshmipur village in Cumilla district. Chanchal had been working at the garage for several years and was the sole breadwinner of his family.
According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police findings, unidentified assailants allegedly poured petrol on the garage’s shutter from outside and set it on fire while Chanchal was asleep inside. He remained trapped in the blaze for a prolonged period and died from suffocation and severe burn injuries.
Local residents alerted the fire service, which broke open the shutter to rescue him, but by the time firefighters reached the spot, his body had already been charred.
Police Superintendent Abdullah Al Faruque of Narsingdi said CCTV footage from nearby cameras has been collected and is being examined.
“We observed a person moving around the garage area in the footage. We are investigating whether the fire was caused deliberately or resulted from an electrical fault,” he said.
He added that evidence has been collected from the scene and that a case is in the process of being registered. No arrests have been made so far.
Chanchal’s family has rejected the possibility of an accident and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, along with the strictest punishment.
The incident comes amid growing concern over a recent surge in violent crimes across different parts of Bangladesh. Authorities have said a full investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and identify the perpetrators.
