Mother Found Hanging, 9-Month-Old Baby Dead on Floor in Bagerhat, Bangladesh

Wife and infant son of jailed Chhatra League leader found dead at home; police probe underway

Bagerhat, Bangladesh — A tragic incident has shocked residents of southern Bangladesh after the bodies of a young mother and her nine-month-old baby were recovered from their home in Bagerhat district on Friday afternoon (January 23).
Police said the body of Suborna Swarnali, 22, was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope inside her room at their house in the village of Sabekdanga, under Karapara Union of Bagerhat Sadar upazila. The lifeless body of her infant son, Nazif, was discovered lying on the floor of the same room.
Suborna was the wife of Jewel Hasan Saddam, president of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League, who has been in jail since August 5 following his arrest in a case filed after the change of government.
The heartbreaking deaths of the young mother and her baby have cast a pall of grief over the local community.
According to police and local sources, family members and neighbors alerted authorities after failing to get a response from inside the house. Police later broke into the room and found the two bodies.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masum Khan of Bagerhat Sadar Model Police Station said police recovered the bodies and sent them to Bagerhat 250-bed District Hospital for autopsy.
“At this moment, it is not possible to say whether this was a case of suicide or murder,” OC Khan said. “We are treating the matter with utmost seriousness. The exact cause of death will be determined after investigation and post-mortem examination.”
He added that all possible angles are being considered as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Police said further details would be shared once forensic reports and investigation findings become available.
