Senegal emerged victorious in a dramatic African Nations Cup final, defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 in Rabat. Pap Gaye’s spectacular goal in extra time secured the title, bringing joy to Senegalese fans and heartbreak to the Moroccan side. This marks Senegal’s second triumph in the competition, following their first win in 2021.
The match remained goalless through 90 minutes, despite several chances for both teams. Senegal’s Pap Gaye nearly scored in the fifth minute with a header from a teammate’s cross. Morocco also had a golden opportunity in the 41st minute, but goalkeeper Yassine Bono made a crucial save.
After a tense second half, an injury to Moroccan player El Aïnaui momentarily disrupted the game, though he returned with a bandage on his forehead. In added time, a controversial VAR decision awarded Senegal a penalty after Moroccan player Dias was fouled. However, the Senegalese players briefly refused to take it, leaving star Sadio Mané to step forward. In a surprising turn, Dias’ low shot was comfortably saved by the Moroccan goalkeeper.
Extra time began with renewed intensity. In the 94th minute, Idrissa Gaye’s through ball allowed Pap Gaye to score with a bullet-like finish, giving Senegal the lead. Morocco had a chance to equalize shortly after, but Naïf’s header struck the crossbar. When the referee blew the final whistle, Senegal celebrated their hard-fought victory, leaving Moroccan fans in tears.
