Doha, January 15, 2026 — The United Kingdom has begun withdrawing some of its military personnel from Qatar’s Al Udeid Air Base, following a similar precautionary move by the United States amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, according to a US official cited by CBS News.
US President Donald Trump described the troop movements as a “precautionary measure.” The report said that while the United States has started a partial drawdown of its forces, a limited number of British military personnel have also been relocated from the base.
The Qatari government said in a statement that the US troop adjustment was made in response to the current regional security situation. The move comes after heightened tensions linked to Iran, where ongoing anti-government protests have drawn international attention.
Earlier this week, President Trump warned that Washington would take strong action against Iran if death sentences against protesters were carried out. In response, Tehran issued threats of retaliation and warned countries hosting US military bases in the region.
Following these developments, the US State Department advised American citizens in the Middle East to exercise increased caution. Qatar, meanwhile, said it has taken all necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens and residents, as well as to protect key infrastructure and military installations.
The UK Ministry of Defence has not officially commented on the troop withdrawal. However, a British government spokesperson confirmed that the UK embassy in Tehran has been temporarily closed and is now operating remotely.
Al Udeid Air Base is the largest US military facility in the Middle East, hosting around 10,000 American troops along with approximately 100 British personnel.
