BRICS 2026: A New Global Blueprint for the Global South

As India assumes the chairmanship, the expanded BRICS bloc seeks to reshape global governance, deepen South-South cooperation and promote multipolar development in a changing world order.

India officially took over the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, marking a critical phase for the bloc as it positions itself as a strategic voice of the Global South in global affairs. With the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” India’s presidency aims to steer BRICS toward a more inclusive and forward-looking global agenda that reflects the priorities of emerging and developing economies.

The BRICS grouping — originally founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — has expanded significantly in recent years, now encompassing a wider coalition of countries representing nearly half the world’s population and a growing share of global economic output. The expansion underscores an evolving Global South dynamic, as nations seek alternatives to Western-centric structures in trade, finance, and governance.

Under India’s leadership, BRICS is expected to prioritize reforms in global multilateral institutions, fairer trade frameworks, technology and sustainable development cooperation, and strengthening financial cooperation mechanisms. Indian officials, including External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, have underscored the need for a more representative international order that addresses the interests of developing nations often sidelined in current global governance architectures.

This new BRICS blueprint also dovetails with broader South-South cooperation initiatives, aimed at enhancing economic integration, infrastructure development and equitable access to technology. The bloc’s growing emphasis on issues such as food and energy security, climate change, and inclusive digital transformation reflects its effort to translate diplomatic rhetoric into tangible development outcomes for the Global South.

Analysts see the 2026 agenda as part of a larger rebalancing of global power structures, where emerging economies assert their stake in shaping the rules of international engagement. As BRICS convenes its annual summit later this year in India, expectations are high that the bloc will present a unified vision that goes beyond traditional economic cooperation — advocating for a global order that is equitable, sustainable and reflective of 21st-century realities.
