COPENHAGEN — The foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland will meet US Vice-President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on January 14, amid renewed pressure from US President Donald Trump to take control of Greenland.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the meeting was requested after President Trump recently intensified threats to assert US control over the Arctic island, which is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt sought talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address the issue. US Vice-President J.D. Vance later confirmed he would also take part in the discussions and will host the meeting at the White House.
“US Vice-President J.D. Vance also wanted to participate in the meeting, and he will host the meeting, which will therefore be held at the White House,” Rasmussen told reporters in Copenhagen on January 13.
The meeting comes as tensions rise over Greenland’s strategic importance in the Arctic, where growing geopolitical competition and security concerns have drawn increased attention from Washington.
