US President Donald Trump has said he plans to speak with Tesla and SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk about restoring internet services in Iran, where access has been cut for four consecutive days amid widespread anti-government protests.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said Musk is “very good at this kind of thing” and hinted that satellite-based internet services provided by SpaceX’s Starlink could be discussed as a possible option to reconnect Iranians to the global internet. The remarks were first reported by British news agency Reuters.
Iran has imposed a nationwide internet blackout since Thursday, severely restricting the flow of information in what analysts describe as the largest wave of protests against the country’s religious leadership since 2022.
Reuters reported that neither Musk nor SpaceX immediately responded to requests for comment on Trump’s remarks.
The blackout has drawn international concern as it coincides with escalating demonstrations across Iran, where authorities have frequently used internet shutdowns to curb communication, mobilization, and the dissemination of protest-related information.
The report also noted that Trump and Musk have had a strained relationship in recent years. While Musk previously supported Trump’s election campaign financially and played a role in efforts to cut federal government spending, the two publicly clashed last year over Trump’s controversial tax legislation.
However, their relationship appears to have warmed again in recent weeks. Trump and Musk were reportedly seen dining together earlier this month at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Separately, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is scheduled to visit a SpaceX facility in Texas on Monday, highlighting renewed engagement between the US government and Musk’s companies.
