BNP Leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir Shot Dead in Dhaka

Senior BNP activist killed and another injured as gunmen open fire in Karwan Bazar area, raising concerns over election-time violence

Dhaka, Jan 8 — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir was shot dead on Wednesday night in Dhaka, while Abu Sufian Masud, General Secretary of the Karwan Bazar Van Association, was injured in the same attack, police and local media reported.

The shooting occurred around 8:40 pm in the Tejturi Bazar area behind Bashundhara Market in the capital’s Karwan Bazar. According to police, unidentified assailants riding motorcycles opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Musabbir, a former general secretary of Dhaka City North Swechchhasebak Dal—the volunteer wing of the BNP—was critically injured and rushed to BRB Hospital, where he later died. Masud sustained gunshot wounds to the left side of his abdomen and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

The death was confirmed by Fazlul Karim, Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) of the Tejgaon Division. “Two people were shot in an alley beside Star Kabab. One of them, Azizur Rahman Musabbir, died from his injuries, while the other is undergoing treatment,” he said.

According to reports, Musabbir had attended a programme near the Super Star Hotel earlier in the evening with residents from Shariatpur. After the event, he and Masud were walking through a nearby lane when the attackers opened fire.

Family members and party activists said Musabbir had been arrested multiple times and spent long periods in jail during the Awami League government.

A native of Shariatpur district, he lived with his family in West Karwan Bazar and was the eldest of three siblings. He had also contested the 2020 Dhaka North City Corporation election as a BNP-backed candidate for the councillor post in Ward-26 of Tejgaon.

Following the killing, BNP activists staged protests near the Sonargaon intersection, condemning the attack and demanding justice. The incident has heightened concerns over law and order ahead of the national election scheduled for February 12, amid reports of increasing political violence across Bangladesh.
