Copenhagen, Jan 6, 2026 — Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has sharply criticised US President Donald Trump for renewing talk of taking over Greenland, urging Washington to “stop the threats” against Denmark and its autonomous territory.
In a statement published on the Danish government’s official website, Frederiksen said it was “absolutely senseless” to suggest that the United States should take control of Greenland, stressing that the US has “no right to annex any of the three nations in the Danish kingdom.”
Her remarks followed a social media post by Katie Miller, a right-wing podcaster and wife of Trump aide Stephen Miller, who shared an image of Greenland coloured like the US flag with the caption “SOON.”
Frederiksen said she was addressing the United States “very directly,” reminding Washington that Denmark — and Greenland — are members of NATO and are covered by the alliance’s collective security guarantee. She added that Denmark already has a defence agreement with the US granting it military access to Greenland and has increased security investments in the Arctic region.
“I would therefore strongly urge the United States to stop the threats against a historically close ally and against another country and another people who have very clearly said that they are not for sale,” she said.
Earlier, Denmark’s ambassador to the US also responded to the post, calling for respect for Danish territorial integrity and reminding Washington of the long-standing alliance between the two countries.
Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic Arctic location and its vast reserves of critical minerals. He has previously refused to rule out the use of force to secure control of the island.
Greenland, home to about 57,000 people, has enjoyed extensive self-rule since 1979, although defence and foreign policy remain under Danish authority. While many Greenlanders support eventual independence from Denmark, opinion polls consistently show strong opposition to becoming part of the United States.
