Seoul, Jan. 3, 2026 — South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has expressed his desire to elevate relations with China to a “new level,” emphasizing economic cooperation, technological partnership, and regional stability ahead of his upcoming visit to Beijing.
In an exclusive interview with China’s state broadcaster China Media Group (CMG), Lee said his primary goal is to resolve existing misunderstandings and rebuild trust between the two neighboring countries. The interview marks his first formal media appearance since returning to the presidential office at the Blue House, underscoring the strategic importance Seoul places on its ties with Beijing.
Referring to growing global instability, Lee noted that South Korea and China are closely interconnected through history, economics, geopolitics, and security. He stressed that peace and stability in Northeast Asia are vital for both nations.
Acknowledging that bilateral relations have faced tensions in recent years, the South Korean leader said those disagreements have hindered cooperation. “This visit aims to narrow that gap and establish a strong relationship that supports mutual development,” he said.
President Lee will be accompanied by a large economic and trade delegation of around 200 members during the China visit. Reflecting on the evolution of bilateral trade, he said past cooperation relied heavily on South Korea’s technology and China’s low-cost labor. However, under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, China has advanced significantly in technology and capital, in some areas surpassing South Korea.
Lee argued that the time has come to restructure the framework of cooperation. He highlighted artificial intelligence and high-tech industries as key areas where Seoul seeks a parallel and equal partnership with Beijing.
Praising China’s global leadership in renewable energy—particularly solar photovoltaic technology—Lee described China’s research capacity as “remarkable” and expressed optimism that deeper cooperation could open a “major window of opportunity” for South Korea.
On geopolitical issues, Lee stressed the importance of maintaining peace in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding regions. He reaffirmed South Korea’s continued respect for the “One China” policy, calling regional stability essential to Seoul’s national interests.
