Colombia Deploys Security Forces Along Venezuelan Border

Bogotá activates humanitarian preparedness amid fears of refugee influx as tensions rise over Venezuela’s unfolding crisis

Bogotá, Jan. 3, 2026 — Colombia has deployed security forces along its border with Venezuela in response to the deteriorating situation in the neighboring country, President Gustavo Petro announced early Saturday.
The decision was taken after an emergency meeting of Colombia’s National Security Council held at around 3:00 a.m. local time, Petro said in a post on social media platform X. The move aims to strengthen border security while preparing for the possibility of a large influx of refugees fleeing Venezuela.
President Petro said Colombia has activated all available humanitarian aid and relief capacities to manage any potential displacement from across the border. He also confirmed that Colombia’s embassy in Venezuela remains operational and continues to provide assistance to Colombian nationals residing there.
As a current member of the United Nations Security Council, Colombia has begun consultations with partner countries to convene an emergency meeting of the council to address the situation in Venezuela.
Expressing deep concern, Petro condemned what he described as aggression against Venezuela and reaffirmed Colombia’s position in support of Venezuelan sovereignty and regional stability in Latin America.
The developments come amid escalating regional tensions linked to the crisis in Venezuela, drawing growing international attention and diplomatic activity.
