Washington, Jan 2, 2026 — US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States would intervene if Iranian authorities open fire on peaceful protesters or kill them violently, amid widespread unrest across Iran driven by a deepening economic crisis.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday, Trump said that if Iran follows what he described as its “habit” of shooting peaceful demonstrators and killing them, the United States would step in to “rescue” the protesters. The warning was reported by British news agency Reuters.
“We are locked and loaded and ready to take action at any moment,” Trump wrote, signaling a hardline stance as protests intensify across the country.
Iran has witnessed its largest demonstrations in nearly three years, sparked by worsening economic conditions. Protests have spread across multiple provinces, turning violent in some areas and resulting in several deaths following clashes between demonstrators and security forces.
The unrest began last Sunday when shopkeepers and traders launched strikes to protest government mismanagement, the rapid devaluation of the national currency, and soaring prices of essential goods. The demonstrations later expanded nationwide, escalating tensions and triggering confrontations with security agencies.
Iran’s economy has been under prolonged strain since 2018, when Trump, during his first term as president, withdrew the United States from the international nuclear agreement and reimposed sweeping sanctions on Tehran. Since then, inflation and economic stagnation have worsened, fueling public anger and repeated waves of protests.
Trump’s latest warning comes as Iran faces mounting domestic instability, raising concerns of further escalation both inside the country and in its already strained relations with Washington.
