US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States may support another large-scale military strike against Iran if Tehran resumes rebuilding its ballistic missile or nuclear weapons programmes.
Trump made the remarks on Monday after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, according to a report by British news agency Reuters.
The US president suggested that despite a major American strike carried out in June, Iran may be attempting to revive its weapons infrastructure. “I’m hearing that they’re rebuilding weapons and other things,” Trump told reporters. He added that Iran was likely using different facilities, rather than those that had been “completely destroyed” in earlier attacks.
Trump said the United States was closely monitoring Iran’s movements and activities. In a characteristically blunt comment, he noted that he hoped Tehran was not pursuing such actions, as deploying B-2 bombers would require a 37-hour round trip. “I don’t want to waste that fuel,” he said.
Alongside Iran, Trump also issued a strong warning to Hamas, saying the group would face “severe consequences” if it did not disarm.
Although Trump has recently spoken about the possibility of a renewed nuclear agreement with Tehran, he said discussions with Netanyahu focused mainly on sustaining the fragile Gaza ceasefire that he helped broker, as well as Israeli concerns over Iran and Lebanon-based Hezbollah.
Iran announced last week that it had conducted missile drills for the second time this month, raising further alarm in Washington and Tel Aviv.
Netanyahu, meanwhile, said Israel does not seek a conflict with Iran but is fully aware of reports regarding Tehran’s activities. He added that these issues would be discussed in detail with Trump.
Despite Washington’s role in mediating three ceasefires — between Israel and Hamas, Israel and Iran, and Israel and Lebanon — Netanyahu has expressed concern that Israel’s adversaries may attempt to regroup after being significantly weakened by recent conflicts.
Overall, Trump’s comments signal continued strong support for Netanyahu, even as some of his advisers privately question the Israeli prime minister’s commitment to the Gaza ceasefire. The remarks suggest Trump remains prepared to risk renewed conflict over Gaza and Iran, while simultaneously claiming credit for efforts to end ongoing wars.
