Sajeeb Wazed Joy, son of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her passing as a “major blow” to ongoing efforts to stabilise Bangladesh.
In a condolence message posted on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday morning, Joy extended his sympathies to Khaleda Zia’s family, supporters, and well-wishers.
“On behalf of myself, I convey my deepest condolences to the grieving family members of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia,” he wrote. “At this critical moment for the country—when ordinary people are suffering from insecurity and deliberate attempts are being made to destabilise and depoliticise Bangladesh—her departure will have a profound impact on the nation’s future course.”
Joy acknowledged Khaleda Zia’s long and eventful political career, noting that despite being subjected to various depoliticisation efforts in the past, she achieved notable political successes and played an important role in shaping national policies.
“Her contributions to nation-building will be remembered forever,” he said, adding that her death has dealt a serious setback to ongoing initiatives aimed at restoring political stability in the country.
He also expressed solidarity with Khaleda Zia’s supporters, saying Bangladesh has lost a powerful and influential political voice.
Begum Khaleda Zia—widely regarded as one of the most uncompromising figures in Bangladeshi politics—passed away at around 6:00am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She had been suffering from multiple health complications for an extended period.
The death of Bangladesh’s first female prime minister marks not only the end of a significant political chapter but also the close of an era. Throughout her life, Khaleda Zia remained a central figure in the struggle for democracy, national sovereignty, and people’s rights. Her passing has cast a deep shadow over the country’s political landscape.
