Trump Calls Putin Ahead of Zelensky Meeting in Florida

US president describes phone conversation with Russian leader as “very productive” before high-stakes talks on Ukraine peace efforts.

US President Donald Trump held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, just hours before his scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida. Trump described the call as “very good and extremely productive,” according to a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The meeting between Trump and Zelensky is set to take place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where journalists have been invited to attend. Trump said the discussion would focus on efforts to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, including territorial issues and possible security guarantees.

In earlier remarks, Trump portrayed his administration as a key global peace broker, citing recent ceasefire efforts elsewhere and criticizing what he described as the limited effectiveness of the United Nations in resolving major conflicts. He suggested that the United States is now playing a leading role in global conflict resolution.

Zelensky, who traveled to Florida for the talks, said on Telegram that important decisions could be made before the end of the year. He stressed that progress depends on continued support for Ukraine and sustained pressure on Russia. After arriving in Florida, Zelensky also spoke by phone with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, discussing preparations for the Trump meeting and coordination with European partners.

Meanwhile, President Putin has accused Ukrainian leaders of lacking genuine interest in a swift, peaceful resolution to the conflict. Speaking during a visit to a military command post, he warned that Russia would continue its “special military operation” if Kyiv refuses a negotiated settlement.

The diplomatic activity comes amid escalating violence. Russian drone and missile attacks on Kyiv from Friday night into Saturday reportedly killed two people and injured dozens, heightening tensions ahead of the Trump–Zelensky talks.
