Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to hold a high-level meeting with US President Donald Trump on Sunday in Florida, as efforts intensify to finalise the framework of a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
According to Zelensky, preparations for a 20-point peace plan and a bilateral security guarantees agreement between Ukraine and the United States are nearly complete, with around 90 percent of the draft already finalised. He expressed hope that “many key issues could be settled before the New Year.”
Territorial disputes remain the most significant obstacle in the negotiations. Sensitive issues such as the future of the Donbas region and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant are expected to dominate the discussions. Russia is demanding full control over Donetsk and Luhansk, while Kyiv insists on freezing the conflict along the current frontlines.
To break the deadlock, the United States has proposed a compromise under which Ukraine would relinquish disputed territories in exchange for the establishment of a free economic zone. However, the practical implementation of this proposal remains unclear.
Zelensky reiterated that any final decision regarding territorial concessions would be made by the Ukrainian people through a possible referendum. He also stressed that Ukraine is seeking a legally binding and robust security agreement with the United States to prevent future Russian aggression, citing past failures of non-binding assurances.
The Kremlin has confirmed receiving peace-related proposals from Washington and said it remains in contact with the Trump administration. Russian media outlet Kommersant reported that President Vladimir Putin may be willing to negotiate if Ukraine agrees to cede full control of the Donbas region in exchange for the return of other occupied territories.
Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Russian forces have intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and cities including Odesa and Kharkiv. At least two people were killed in a Russian strike on Kharkiv on Friday.
Zelensky said he would also urge Trump to push for increased international pressure on Russia during their meeting. European leaders may join the discussions virtually, highlighting the broader international stakes surrounding the talks.
