Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma underlined their enduring dominance in one-day cricket on Wednesday with landmark achievements in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic List A tournament.
Playing for Delhi against Andhra Pradesh in Bengaluru, Kohli surpassed batting great Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest player to reach 16,000 runs in List A cricket. The former India captain achieved the milestone in just 330 innings, significantly fewer than Tendulkar’s 391. Gordon Greenidge, Ricky Ponting, Graham Gooch and Viv Richards trail further behind on the list.
Kohli now holds the unique distinction of being the fastest batter to reach every thousand-run mark from 10,000 to 16,000 runs in List A cricket. In One-Day Internationals, he has scored 14,557 runs in 296 innings, while Tendulkar amassed 18,426 ODI runs from 452 matches as part of his overall 21,999 List A runs.
Earlier in the day in Jaipur, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma delivered a blistering knock against Sikkim, scoring 155 off 94 balls. The innings featured 18 fours and nine sixes, with Rohit reaching his century in just 62 deliveries.
With the knock, Rohit registered his ninth 150-plus score in the one-day format, equalling the record held by Australia’s David Warner for the most such innings. At 38 years and 238 days, Rohit also became the second-oldest centurion in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, behind Bengal’s Anustup Majumdar.
Despite stepping away from Test and T20 international cricket, Kohli and Rohit continue to demonstrate their class and impact in the one-day format, turning a routine domestic fixture into a day of record-breaking feats.
