UK Bangladesh Students’ League Condemns Attack on Sumon Das Ghosh’s Residence in Habiganj

Student body calls the incident an act of political intolerance, urges swift investigation and protection of democratic voices

Dhaka/London, December 19, 2025 — The United Kingdom branch of the Bangladesh Students’ League (BSL) has strongly condemned an attack on the residence of Sumon Das Ghosh in Habiganj, describing the incident as a “cowardly act of political intolerance” and demanding immediate action to ensure accountability and safety.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the BSL-UK said Sumon Das Ghosh—who is a member of the Awami League’s Religious Affairs Sub-Committee and serves as the Science and Technology Editor of the London Metropolitan Awami League—was targeted in what it termed a politically motivated assault involving vandalism and intimidation.

The organisation noted that Ghosh has long been vocal against extremism and authoritarian tendencies, both at home and abroad, and has actively raised awareness on democratic values and anti-fascist movements across the UK and Europe. “Attempts to silence dissent through violence reflect a dangerous erosion of democratic norms,” the statement said.

BSL-UK President Tamim Ahmed and General Secretary Nehal Hasan (Shojib Bhuiyan) said such attacks cannot suppress democratic ideals. “This incident has only strengthened his resolve. History, justice and truth stand with him,” they said, adding that fear and intimidation have no place in politics.

The student body urged authorities to conduct a fair and transparent investigation, ensure the security of Ghosh and his family, and bring those responsible to justice. It also called on all pro-democracy forces to unite against political violence and intolerance, stressing the need to safeguard freedom of expression and the rule of law in Bangladesh.
