Trump Files Multi-Billion Dollar Defamation Lawsuit Against BBC

US President accuses British broadcaster of misleadingly editing Capitol riot speech

Miami, Dec 16, 2025:
US President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), seeking billions of dollars in damages over what he claims was the misleading presentation of one of his speeches related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack.

According to the lawsuit filed on Monday (December 15) in a federal court in Miami, Trump alleges that the BBC aired an edited video clip in a way that falsely suggested he had directly instructed his supporters to attack the US Capitol after losing the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden.

The complaint states that the BBC combined two separate parts of the same speech—one in which Trump urged supporters to march toward the Capitol and another where he used the phrase “fight like hell”—without proper context. Trump argues that the edited clip omitted his explicit call for “peaceful” protest, thereby portraying him as inciting violence.

Trump has demanded $5 billion in damages for each of two counts, accusing the BBC not only of defamation but also of violating a Florida law that prohibits deceptive and unfair commercial practices.

Although the BBC has previously apologized to Trump, acknowledging an error in editorial judgment and admitting that the edit could have created a misleading impression, the broadcaster has maintained that there is no legal basis for the lawsuit.

In the court filing, Trump said that despite the apology, the BBC failed to show genuine remorse or implement meaningful institutional reforms to prevent similar journalistic misconduct in the future.

A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team claimed that the BBC has long misled audiences about Trump as part of what they described as a “left-wing political agenda.”

Before news of the lawsuit became public, a BBC spokesperson told Reuters that the organization had not received any further communication from Trump’s lawyers and that its position remained unchanged. Following the filing of the lawsuit, the BBC did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
