Bangladeshi Journalist Anis Alamgir Picked Up by Police

Senior journalist says he was brought in for questioning; authorities yet to clarify reasons

Dhaka, Dec 14, 2025:
Senior journalist Anis Alamgir has been taken to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, according to his own account.Bangladesh the daily Prothom Alo revealed a news regarding the issue.

Speaking over the phone from the DB office on Sunday night, Alamgir said he was picked up from a gym in the Dhanmondi area of the capital.
“I was brought here from a gym in Dhanmondi. DB officials told me their chief wants to speak with me,” he said.

Alamgir said he was taken from Dhanmondi around 7:30 pm and arrived at the DB office at about 8:00 pm, where he has since been waiting. As of the time of speaking, he had not yet met the DB chief.

A veteran journalist, Anis Alamgir has worked with several media outlets, including the daily Ajker Kagoj, and has recently been in the public spotlight for his comments on television talk shows.

The incident comes amid growing concern over press freedom in Bangladesh during the interim government period, with journalists and media rights groups reporting an increase in questioning, surveillance, legal harassment, and informal detentions of media professionals, particularly those critical of political developments or security agencies.

Several journalists have reportedly been summoned by law enforcement agencies without formal charges, while others have faced pressure related to their television commentary, social media posts, or investigative reporting. Rights advocates warn that such actions risk creating a climate of fear and self-censorship within the media community at a sensitive political moment.

Attempts to contact DB officials for clarification on why Alamgir was taken in did not receive an immediate response.
