Australia have moved into a commanding 2–0 lead in the Ashes after defeating England by eight wickets in the second Test at the Gabba, leaving Ben Stokes’ side on the brink of losing the series.
England were bowled out for 241 on the fourth day despite a determined effort from captain Ben Stokes, who abandoned his usual aggressive “Bazball” approach to compile a patient 50 off 152 balls. His seventh-wicket stand of 96 with Will Jacks—who made 41—was England’s longest partnership of the series.
But the resistance ended when Australian captain Steve Smith took a stunning catch at first slip to dismiss Jacks. From there, England collapsed, losing their final four wickets for just 17 runs. Michael Neser claimed his maiden Test five-wicket haul, while Brendan Doggett also chipped in.
Australia were set only 65 for victory, a target they chased down in 10 overs despite losing two wickets. Gus Atkinson bowled Travis Head for 21 to break the opening stand of 37, and Marnus Labuschagne fell cheaply for 3. Steve Smith (23*) and Jack Weatherald (17*) guided the hosts home without further trouble.
England now trail 2–0 in the five-match series and must win all remaining Tests to regain the Ashes. History, however, offers little hope—England have never overturned a 2–0 deficit to beat Australia in an Ashes contest.
