A Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activist, Momin Khan Shakil, who went missing after joining a rally in Dhaka’s Diabari area, has been found dead in the Turag River. Shakil had participated in a demonstration on November 30 protesting the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict against Sheikh Hasina. He disappeared while returning home after the rally.
Body Recovered After Two Days of Searching
Shakil, originally from Dhanbari upazila in Tangail district, worked in a junior position at a private company in Dhaka. Alongside his job, he was regularly involved in Awami League political activities.
According to family members and party sources, he failed to return home after the November 30 protest, prompting frantic searches by relatives and fellow activists. His floating body was later recovered from the Turag River.
Family, Colleagues Allege Abduction and Murder
Relatives and fellow BCL activists claim that Shakil was abducted on his way home after the rally. They allege that he was brutally murdered and his body dumped in the river to conceal the crime. Shakil, who came from a financially struggling family, leaves behind a young child.
Protests and Outrage Among Party Ranks
News of Shakil’s death has sparked widespread anger among Awami League and BCL members. Leaders and activists have condemned the killing on social media and party forums, demanding a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for those responsible. Many of his colleagues have vowed to stay on the streets until justice is served.
Call for Immediate Investigation
Party activists are urging authorities to identify the perpetrators behind the murder. They warn that Shakil’s death will not be forgotten and insist that justice must be ensured promptly to prevent further unrest.
