Freedom fighter and Dhaka North City Corporation Ward-12 councillor, as well as Ward Awami League president, Murad Hossain, has died at the Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur. His party, the Bangladesh Awami League, has alleged that his death was the result of a “planned killing.”
According to party sources, Murad Hossain had been imprisoned in connection with a case filed by the current government. Family members and Awami League leaders claim that he became seriously ill while behind bars but was not provided with proper medical care. They allege that he died “without treatment.”
Murad Hossain, a former meritorious student of Dhaka University, was a well-known representative in Mirpur. He served as president of the Awami League’s Ward-12 unit and was the husband of Shirin Roksana, joint general secretary of the Bangladesh Mahila Awami League.
News of his death sparked shock and anger among Awami League leaders and activists. In an official condolence message, the party said he died “in custody without treatment after being falsely implicated by an illegal and undemocratic occupying government.” The party condemned the incident, calling it suspicious and describing it as a potential act of “murder.”
Reactions have also poured in across social media, with many demanding a fair and transparent investigation and justice for those responsible.
However, jail authorities at Kashimpur and relevant government offices have not yet issued any official statement regarding the circumstances of his death.
The sudden loss of the freedom fighter and popular local leader has cast a pall of mourning over Mirpur and the broader political landscape.
