Lebanon to Lodge Complaint at UN Over Israel’s Border Wall

Lebanon accuses Israel of violating the UN-designated Blue Line by building a concrete wall inside Lebanese territory, calling it an attack on sovereignty.

Lebanon is set to file a complaint at the United Nations Security Council against Israel over a concrete wall being built along the southern border. According to a statement by the Lebanese Presidency on Saturday (15 November), the wall extends beyond the “Blue Line” into Lebanese territory, thus infringing on the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. This act is also said to violate UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The report was published by Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera.

UN Secretary-General’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric also stated on Friday that because of this wall, more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese land has become inaccessible to local residents.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has already requested the removal of the wall.

An Israeli military spokesperson, however, denied the allegations, claiming that the wall does not breach the Blue Line.

The construction is part of a broader IDF security plan that began in 2022. The initiative aims to reinforce physical security along the northern border amid ongoing conflict.

The Blue Line is a UN-drawn border demarcation separating Lebanon from Israel and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. When Israel withdrew its forces from southern Lebanon in 2000, it returned to this Blue Line.

Established in 1978, UNIFIL operates between the Litani River and the Blue Line. The mission includes over 10,000 peacekeepers from 50 countries and 800 civilian staff.
