The BJP-led NDA alliance has secured a landslide victory in the recently concluded Bihar state assembly elections. Indian Prime Minister and top BJP leader Narendra Modi has stated that this victory will pave the way for a BJP win in the upcoming West Bengal elections.
The Bihar Legislative Assembly comprises 243 seats. Voting took place in two phases: the first phase on November 6 covered 121 seats, where voter turnout exceeded 65%. The second phase was held on November 11 for 122 seats, with more than 68% turnout. Overall, nearly 67% of the electorate cast their votes.
Vote counting began at 8 AM local time on Friday, and the Election Commission released the final results later that night.
The main contest was between the BJP-Janata Dal United (JDU)-led NDA coalition and the Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led Grand Alliance. According to the final tally, the NDA won in 202 out of 242 declared seats, while the Grand Alliance secured just 35 seats.
Within the NDA, the BJP emerged victorious in 89 seats, followed by the JDU with 85 seats. Additionally, Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party won 19 seats, while Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha secured 5 seats.
Political strategist Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, considered an “X-factor” in this election, failed to win any seats. On the other hand, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, emerged as a “dark horse” by winning 5 seats.
Congratulating the NDA on the victory, Modi said, “Some political parties pursued minority appeasement, but the women and youth of Bihar have chosen the NDA.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Modi expressed confidence in a BJP victory, stating: “The Ganges flows from Bihar into Bengal. Bihar has paved the way for BJP’s win in West Bengal. I assure my brothers and sisters in Bengal, we will uproot the jungle raj together.”
