In a recent allegation that has sparked widespread discussion on social media, National Citizen Party (NCP) Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain has been accused of demanding 5 million taka in bribes for appointing public prosecutors (PPs) across various districts.
The accusation was made during a Facebook Live session late Friday night by former central organizer Muntasir Mahmud, who was recently permanently expelled from the party.
Before going live, Muntasir issued a one-hour ultimatum for Akhtar Hossain to offer an unconditional apology.
During the live broadcast, Muntasir Mahmud recounted an incident from Narsingdi, saying, “Back then, I was the central secretary of the Student Rights Council. After the July mass uprising, when Dr. Asif Nazrul and others took charge as advisers to the interim government, PP appointments were being made nationwide. We proposed the name of Shirin Akhtar Shelly, whose son, Golam Reshad Tomal, was our joint convener.”
He further alleged, “Akhtar’s people removed Shirin Apa’s name and replaced it with that of another woman who paid them money. This is despite the fact that Shirin Apa supported both me and Akhtar extensively during the fascist government.”
Following the live broadcast, the allegations quickly gained traction on social media. However, Akhtar Hossain or his representatives have not yet issued any statement in response to the accusations.
