AL Announces Nationwide Protest and Shutdown to Topple Yunus Govt

Sheikh Hasina calls Yunus’s rule “unconstitutional” as Awami League launches new wave of protests, strikes, and demonstrations across Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Awami League has unveiled a new wave of protest programs demanding the resignation of interim government chief Dr. Muhammad Yunus, intensifying the country’s escalating political standoff.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, the party will observe nationwide protests, demonstrations, and resistance programs on Friday and Saturday (November 14–15), followed by a two-day nationwide shutdown (hartal) on Sunday and Monday (November 16–17).

Party chief and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reaffirmed her party’s resolve to continue the movement until what she described as the “unconstitutional rule of Yunus” comes to an end.

“The people of Bangladesh will not accept an unelected, foreign-backed ruler,” Hasina said in a video address from an undisclosed location. “Our struggle will continue until Yunus steps down and democracy is restored. This is now a people’s movement — one demand, one goal.”

She also accused Dr. Yunus of using the interim government to “silence political voices, arrest opposition leaders, and surrender national interests under international pressure.”

Over the Last two days,, the Awami League’s protests have triggered violent clashes, arson attacks, and transport disruptions across several districts, including Dhaka, Faridpur, Shariatpur, and Tangail. At least a dozen people have been injured, while several vehicles and government offices were set ablaze.

Law enforcement agencies have been placed on high alert, with additional paramilitary forces deployed in major urban centers. The interim government has urged citizens to remain calm, warning that “any attempts to destabilize public order will be dealt with firmly.”

Political analysts warn that Bangladesh is entering a critical phase, with tensions between the Awami League and the Yunus administration deepening by the day. International organizations, including the United Nations and the European Union, have called on all parties to show restraint and resume dialogue to prevent further escalation.

In her concluding remarks, Hasina reiterated the party’s stance, “We have one demand and one direction — Yunus must go. Until then, our movement will not stop.”
