On this day 107 years ago, the great causes of liberty, sovereignty, and human dignity were secured at the conclusion of World War I—one of the most remarkable demonstrations of U.S. military resolve in our nation’s history. Today, we honor every hero who shed blood for freedom, and we renew our commitment to defend the needs, values, and interests of the American people above all else.
Following the outbreak of World War I in 1914, Europe was engulfed in chaos that soon drew the western world into brutal conflict. After deadly German submarine attacks on American vessels, the United States entered the war in 1917—decisively altering the course of the conflict and showcasing the unmatched strength of the U.S. Armed Forces. Supported by the power of American industry, millions of young Americans left their homes to confront the Central Powers’ campaign of violence and oppression.
On November 11, 1918, the armistice forced tyranny to its knees, ending one of history’s deadliest wars. More than 320,000 Americans suffered casualties, their sacrifices forming the bedrock of the victory. Without their courage, the world we know today would be unrecognizable.
From Verdun to the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, from the Somme and Belleau Wood to Flanders Fields, the Great War transformed American military capability—ushering in the dawn of air power, advancing battlefield medicine, and reshaping warfare on land and sea. Today, President Trump’s administration continues to uphold that legacy of Peace Through Strength, securing historic peace agreements—including a deal to end the war in Gaza—and helping nations move beyond decades of conflict.
More than a century later, we honor the American service members whose victory proved that no tyranny can withstand the strength of the U.S. military, no competitor can match American industry, and no adversary can break the spirit of the American people. As our nation approaches its 250th year, we draw inspiration from their grit and patriotism and pledge to continue the fight for the principles that define our Republic and safeguard our freedom.
