Amid increased tensions in India–Bangladesh bilateral relations, India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has issued a stern warning to Bangladesh’s Interim Government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus.
Criticizing Yunus for his recent controversial remarks, Singh advised him to “watch his words,” emphasizing that although India seeks friendly relations with its neighbours, it is fully prepared to confront any challenge if necessary.
In an interview with News18, Rajnath Singh stated, “We do not want a tense relationship with Bangladesh. But Yunus (the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government) should be cautious about what he says.”
He further reiterated that India follows a long-standing policy of maintaining cordial relations with neighbouring states, while making it clear that New Delhi does not shy away from challenges.
Context of the Controversy
Rajnath Singh’s comments come at a moment when several of Yunus’s recent statements have generated intense debate. The key issues include:
1. Controversial Remarks During China Visit
During a visit to China last March, Yunus stated that India’s northeastern states are “landlocked” and suggested that Bangladesh is their only “guardian” to the sea. India responded with a strong diplomatic protest, calling the remarks unacceptable.
2. Allegations of Anti-India Sentiment
There are increasing allegations that during Yunus’s interim administration, certain groups in Bangladesh are being encouraged to adopt anti-India views. Analysts argue that such narratives may be aimed at diverting attention from internal weaknesses and advancing political interests.
Diplomatic Significance
Diplomatic observers consider Rajnath Singh’s direct warning highly significant. India’s firm stance underscores that it will not compromise on matters involving national interest or territorial integrity. The incident has drawn attention to how India–Bangladesh relations may evolve in the coming days.
