London’s Bangladeshi-origin MP Apsana Begum has once again become the centre of a fresh controversy. Despite earning a substantial annual income, allegations have gone viral on social media claiming that she still lives in a council house. This has reignited discussions in local politics and within the Bangladeshi community.
A social media user alleged that thousands in the area are still waiting for government housing and homelessness is rising—yet a high-earning public representative is occupying housing meant for the poor.
After the post spread, a section of citizens supported the allegation and expressed anger towards Apsana Begum.
Meanwhile, another group defended her, saying she continues to work for disadvantaged communities despite facing personal and political adversity. Supporters argue that she has experienced domestic abuse and, as a minority woman in politics, continues to navigate hostile circumstances. They claim there is nothing wrong with her receiving the same public benefits as ordinary citizens.
Critics, however, say it is unethical for a high-income individual to live in housing allocated for low-income residents.
Apsana Begum grew up in Tower Hamlets. Her late father was a former local representative. Her family roots trace back to Sunamganj in Sylhet. Earlier this year, she drew attention for an emotional speech in Parliament regarding domestic violence. Her stance in support of abused women was widely praised.
The reporter attempted to reach her for comment regarding the housing allegations through calls and messages but received no response.
