A political advertisement had significantly angered US President Donald Trump, according to a Reuters report — and Canada appears to be trying to defuse the situation by issuing an apology to the world’s most powerful officeholder.
On Saturday (1 November), Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that he had apologised to President Trump for a political advertisement broadcast in Ontario that was aimed at Americans.
The advertisement was aired under the supervision of Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford. It included a clip of former US President Ronald Reagan saying, “Tariffs hurt every American. They trigger trade wars and bring economic disaster.”
Reagan had made those remarks in a 1987 radio address on foreign trade.
Shortly afterward, Trump announced a 10% tariff increase on Canadian goods, and within days, all bilateral talks between the two countries were suspended.
