Demonstrations at 25 Points in Dhaka, Over 150 Detained; Sheikh Hasina Takes Responsibility for the Arrested

In a rare and unexpected move following the protests and arrests, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly taken personal responsibility for the detained opposition activists.

On Tuesday morning, opposition parties staged widespread anti-government processions and rallies at at least 25 key points across the capital, Dhaka. Police detained around 150 activists from these demonstrations, citing concerns over deteriorating law and order and possible acts of sabotage.

However, the day’s political developments took an unexpected turn when Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina personally assumed responsibility for overseeing the welfare and legal assistance of the detained opposition activists.

Protests Across 25 Points

Leaders and activists from various opposition parties launched protest marches across 25 different locations in Dhaka on Tuesday morning. They chanted slogans demanding control over soaring commodity prices, the formation of a caretaker government, and the release of detained party members.

The demonstrations spread across major areas including Farmgate, Paltan, Motijheel, Mirpur, Uttara, and Old Dhaka. Police were seen taking precautionary positions in several locations to maintain order. In some areas, minor clashes broke out between protesters and police, leading to significant traffic disruptions across the city.

Over 150 Activists Detained

According to sources at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), approximately 150 activists were detained from different parts of the capital on allegations of public disorder and attempts at sabotage. DMP officials stated that the detainees have been accused of disrupting public order and are currently being interrogated at various police stations.

Sheikh Hasina Takes Responsibility: An Unprecedented Move

In a rare and unexpected development following the protests and subsequent arrests, Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly taken personal responsibility for the detained opposition activists.

A reliable source within the Awami League’s top leadership told the media that the Prime Minister made the decision on humanitarian grounds. She has directed the concerned authorities to ensure that the detainees receive proper legal support and that their fundamental rights are not violated.

Political analysts note that such an action—where the head of the ruling party takes responsibility for arrested opposition activists—is virtually unprecedented in Bangladesh’s political history. Some interpret the move as a gesture of political magnanimity, while others view it as part of a broader strategic maneuver.
