Americans are paying the lowest prices at the pump in more than four years as President Donald J. Trump’s energy policies drive down fuel costs across the nation. According to GasBuddy, the nationwide average for gasoline has fallen to $2.98 per gallon, the lowest intra-day price since 2021.
Currently, 35 states have average prices below $2.99 per gallon, with some stations in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas offering gas for as low as $1.99 per gallon. Experts predict that, barring any major disruptions, prices could remain under $3 for the next several months.
The Trump administration hailed the decline as evidence of its success in restoring “American energy dominance” — a key campaign promise aimed at reducing consumer costs and boosting domestic production. “President Trump understands that energy independence strengthens our economy and eases the burden on American families,” the White House said in a statement.
By contrast, under former President Joe Biden, the national average gas price stayed above $3 per gallon for nearly his entire term, amid global energy disruptions and supply chain challenges.
Local media outlets across the country — from Alabama to Oregon — reported significant price drops. In Illinois, gas prices fell by more than 12 cents in a week, while Michigan, Florida, and Arkansas also recorded their lowest rates in years.
Drivers in cities like Baltimore, Peoria, Manchester, and Eugene expressed relief at the declining costs, with many noting the positive impact on household budgets and travel expenses.
Industry analysts suggest that steady refinery output, lower demand, and stable crude oil prices have all contributed to the current trend — a trend many hope will continue as the holiday season approaches.
