Sheikh Hasina: “Army Could Have Stood by People Instead of Betraying Them.”

The army built by Bangabandhu in 1971 has lost its direction — now protecting terrorists and arresting its own officers, damaging its global reputation, the Awami League chief says.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that the Bangladesh Army, instead of betraying the nation, could have stood by its people in this critical time.

In a statement published on the official Awami League page, Hasina remarked, “The Bangladeshi army could have refrained from betrayal and stayed beside the people. Bangabandhu built this army after 1971, and when I came to power, I did everything for them — something no other political party ever did.”

She further stated, “I developed the army, provided them with every facility and opportunity. Neither Ershad, Zia, nor Khaleda Zia ever did that.”

Expressing concern over recent developments, Hasina added, “Today that same army is protecting terrorists in Bangladesh. They are arresting their own retired officers. What image does that create for them in the world?”

She noted that Bangladesh once ranked first internationally for its army’s reputation but has now fallen to third place, warning, “In a few days, it will fall even further.”

Hasina’s remarks come amid growing internal tensions, arrests of former military officials, and rising international scrutiny over Bangladesh’s political and security situation.
