Cristiano Ronaldo has added another remarkable achievement to his legendary career, setting a new all-time record in FIFA World Cup qualifying history.
The 40-year-old Portuguese superstar scored twice in Portugal’s 2-2 draw against Hungary on Tuesday, surpassing Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz to become the top scorer in World Cup qualifiers with 41 goals. Before the match, Ronaldo and Ruiz were tied with 39.
“It’s no secret how much it means to represent my national team. I’m incredibly proud to reach this milestone for Portugal,” Ronaldo wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. “Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way. See you in November to seal our World Cup qualification!”
Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, converting a close-range finish after a precise low cross from Nelson Semedo. He doubled Portugal’s lead just before halftime, tapping in another cross from Nuno Mendes.
Despite his brilliance, Hungary’s Dominik Szoboszlai equalized in stoppage time, denying Portugal a victory.
Ronaldo now boasts 143 international goals for Portugal—extending the men’s international scoring record he first broke in 2021.
Portugal, still leading Group F of UEFA qualification by five points, will aim to confirm its World Cup spot against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on November 13.
“After the second goal, we slowed down, and they took advantage,” left-back Nuno Mendes told UEFA after the match. “We must stay focused and get it right in November.”
Elsewhere, England, Ivory Coast, Senegal, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar all booked their places for next year’s World Cup, which kicks off on June 11, 2026 in North America. So far, 28 of the 48 participating nations have qualified.
