Google to Build $15 Billion AI Data Hub in India

The data hub will be located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and will be part of Google’s global AI network spanning 12 countries.

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has announced a $15 billion (around £11.29 billion) investment to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) data hub in Andhra Pradesh, southern India, according to a BBC report.

Speaking at an event in New Delhi on Tuesday, Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said the facility would be the largest AI hub outside the United States, marking Google’s biggest investment in India to date. The entire project is expected to be completed within five years.

The AI data hub, to be located in the port city of Visakhapatnam, will become part of Google’s global network of AI centers, which currently spans 12 countries.

In a statement, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said the new hub would enable Indian businesses and users to access Google’s cutting-edge AI technology, boosting innovation and economic growth across the country.

The Andhra Pradesh government confirmed that a formal agreement for the project would be signed on Tuesday. Technology Minister Nara Lokesh described it as a “major step forward for the state’s digital future, innovation, and global standing.”

The project will integrate Google’s cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy systems and includes plans to expand the state’s fiber-optic network.

According to Bloomberg News, the Andhra Pradesh government aims to develop 6 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2029, offering subsidized land and electricity to attract foreign investors.

A data center is a physical facility that houses servers, storage systems, and networking equipment to collect, process, and store data—supported by power supply and cooling systems.

With its low data costs and rapidly expanding internet user base, India is emerging as one of the world’s most attractive destinations for setting up AI and cloud data centers, drawing significant interest from global technology giants.
