Hindu Businessman Murdered Near Police Station Sparks Outrage in Bangladesh

The killing of shopkeeper Narayan Pal in Netrokona’s Mohanganj highlights rising attacks on Hindu minorities and failures of law enforcement.

Netrokona, Bangladesh — October 7, 2025 — A brutal murder in Netrokona’s Mohanganj has once again ignited fears of growing attacks on Bangladesh’s Hindu minority.

Narayan Pal, a 40-year-old shopkeeper and father of two, was found slain inside his grocery store barely 150 yards from the local police station — a killing that residents say exposes a deepening breakdown in law and order.

According to local sources, the murder took place around 11:15 PM Monday inside Narayan Store at Thana Mor. Neighbors discovered the body lying in a pool of blood, his throat slit, and immediately alerted police. Officers from Mohanganj Police Station recovered the body and began their inquiry, sending it to Netrokona Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam told reporters that police have “prepared the inquest report” and are “examining all possible angles.” Investigators are analyzing CCTV footage from nearby businesses to trace the suspects. Despite the murder’s proximity to the police station, no arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning.

Fear Among Minorities

The killing has shaken the Hindu community of Mohanganj and beyond, coming amid what human rights monitors describe as an ongoing wave of violence and intimidation against minorities. Community leaders have condemned the murder, calling it a “targeted attack” and demanding swift justice.

Local residents say Hindu families in the region now live in fear. “If someone can be killed this close to the police station, then who is safe?” one community member asked.

The Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Council has documented a sharp rise in attacks since August 2024, including looting, arson, assault, and the destruction of temples and homes. Rights group Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) earlier reported hundreds of deaths and injuries during unrest following the political transition that month.

Security and Impunity

Critics say the murder underscores the failures of local law enforcement and the erosion of public confidence in state protection. The fact that the killing occurred within shouting distance of a police station has prompted outrage across social media, where users accused officers of negligence or complicity.

Human rights advocates argue that the failure to deliver justice in earlier cases has emboldened attackers. Despite repeated government assurances, very few perpetrators of religious violence in Bangladesh have been prosecuted or convicted in recent years.

A Nation on Edge

Bangladesh’s minority communities, who make up less than 10 percent of the population, have long complained of political marginalization, land seizures, and religious intolerance. Analysts warn that the current instability — marked by political violence, administrative reshuffling, and rising extremism — has worsened these vulnerabilities.

The killing of Narayan Pal adds to a grim list of similar incidents across the country. Each has followed the same pattern: a brutal assault, delayed investigation, and public outrage that fades without justice.

Community leaders in Netrokona have urged the Home Ministry to form a high-level inquiry committee and to deploy additional forces in vulnerable areas. They stress that only swift arrests and transparent legal proceedings can restore public confidence.

For now, the shop where Narayan Pal once sold rice, lentils, and salt remains shuttered — a silent reminder of a life ended violently, and of a community still waiting for protection and peace.
