Dhaka, October 2025 — Qatar Charity has constructed 256 fully equipped mosques across Bangladesh between July 2024 and July 2025 with support from Qatari donors, according to a report published in Qatar Tribune.
The organization said the initiative aimed to provide safe, durable, and well-facilitated places of worship for rural and semi-urban communities. More than 51,200 worshippers are expected to benefit directly from the new structures.
Each mosque includes ablution facilities, fans, lighting, sound systems, prayer mats, and raised flooring, replacing older tin-shed or mud-built structures that lacked safety and comfort.
“This mosque used to be nothing more than a broken tin shed with no electricity or proper flooring,” said Md. Babul Khan, president of a mosque committee in Barisal. “Now we have a proper building where people can pray and hold religious lessons.”
Improved community facilities
Local residents say the new mosques have become centers of community gathering beyond the five daily prayers. Many are now hosting Qur’an lessons, youth activities, and community meetings.
“This is more than just a building—it has become the heart of our village,” said Abul Ali, a mosque secretary in Faridpur district. “Every day, more people attend prayers, and we finally have space for teaching and meetings.”
The mosques were built in areas where existing facilities were made of tin or mud and often flooded during the monsoon season. According to Qatar Charity, the new buildings ensure comfort for worshippers during both summer and rainy months.
Local acknowledgment
Government officials in several districts have commended the project for improving local infrastructure and providing permanent facilities for community use.
“Building mosques helps meet the long-standing needs of rural communities,” said Md. Shahadat Hussen, a local government official. “Such projects strengthen both social and spiritual life in the villages.”
Qatar Charity’s statement
Zakarya Ali Al Motair, country director of Qatar Charity’s Bangladesh Office, said the organization remains committed to supporting local communities through sustainable development.
“The smiles and satisfaction of the beneficiaries are our greatest reward,” he said. “We hope these mosques will serve as places of peace, unity, and guidance for generations.”
Over the past five years, Qatar Charity has constructed more than 600 mosques in Bangladesh, benefiting over 150,000 worshippers nationwide. The organization operates in multiple sectors, including education, health, water supply, and social welfare.
