In Gaza’s Heart, Hopes Rise – and Doubts Linger – After Hamas Embraces Trump’s Plan

Displaced Palestinians in Deir Al Balah voice cautious optimism and skepticism as Hamas signals willingness to free hostages and enter negotiations.

Deir Al Balah, Central Gaza — In tents among the broken walls and fields of rubble, displaced Palestinians in Deir Al Balah say the past two years of conflict have worn them down. When news came that Hamas responded “positively” to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 20-point proposal to end the Gaza war, some dared to believe peace might finally arrive.

“We are tired,” says 28-year-old Areej Ayoush, her eyes shadowed by stress and years of displacement. “I believe this time there will be a ceasefire… people are exhausted now.” Her hope echoes among families whose daily lives have become defined by waiting — for aid, for news, for a truce.

But not everyone shares her cautious optimism. Lina Taha, another displaced resident, responds with hardened skepticism:

“A ceasefire is impossible, because for almost more than two years they’ve been talking in the same tone, the same refrain… they give us hope for nothing.”

That blend of yearning and doubt now characterizes much of Gaza’s mood: a frail optimism shadowed by memory.

What Hamas and Trump Are Proposing

Hamas announced it was prepared to release all Israeli hostages and ready to enter immediate negotiations to clarify details of Trump’s 20-point peace initiative.

President Trump has praised Hamas’s initial response and urged Israel to pause its bombardment to facilitate the release. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed conditional support but remains wary of provisions on withdrawal and disarmament.

Among the most contentious points:

  • Disarmament of Hamas — a key Israeli and U.S. demand
  • Control of Gaza — Trump’s plan calls for a technocratic administration to replace Hamas’s rule
  • Ceasefire and hostages — all hostages must be returned within 72 hours of agreement

Hamas has expressed willingness in principle but has not committed fully to timelines or relinquishing control unconditionally.

The Human Cost & Stakes Behind Every Promise

While diplomats deliberate, civilians in Gaza continue to suffer. Israeli strikes have killed dozens even as negotiations intensify, with Deir Al Balah among the hardest-hit areas. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and infrastructure lies in ruin.

The hostage crisis remains central. Since October 2023, over 250 Israeli hostages were taken; some have been freed in earlier exchanges, but many remain unaccounted for. Any deal hinges on resolving this issue.

For many Palestinians, repeated failures of ceasefire negotiations fuel distrust. Lina’s frustration reflects a broader exhaustion with unkept promises.

Why Some Tilt Toward Hope

Yet, despite skepticism, hope persists. Areej and others point to sheer exhaustion as a force pushing leaders toward compromise. The symbolism of Hamas engaging openly with a U.S. proposal, and the willingness to discuss releasing hostages, has created a fragile sense of possibility.

Regional pressure is also mounting. Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey are encouraging Hamas to accept the plan. Mediators describe this as one of the most serious openings for talks since the conflict reignited.

For many Gazans, even a partial ceasefire could mean humanitarian corridors, access to aid, and respite from bombardment.

Roadblocks Lined Across the Path

Still, obstacles remain:

  • Divisions within Hamas between political and military wings
  • Israel’s insistence on disarmament and security guarantees
  • Questions over who would administer Gaza during any transition
  • A deep public trust deficit after repeated failed truces

What This Moment Could Mean

If the plan succeeds, the conflict could shift from battlefield to negotiation table. For civilians, it could mean survival, reconstruction, and a first step toward normalcy.

But failure could spark renewed bloodshed, discredit moderates on both sides, and deepen Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe.

For now, Gazans balance hope and doubt, waiting once again to see if this moment will become history or heartbreak.
