Bangladesh sealed their T20I series against Afghanistan on Friday night with a dramatic two-wicket win in the second match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match contest.
A tense chase under the Sharjah lights
Set 148 for victory after another disciplined bowling effort, Bangladesh looked headed for defeat when their top order collapsed to 24-3 inside the first five overs. Azmatullah Omarzai’s double strike—removing openers inside the Powerplay—combined with Mujeeb ur Rahman’s dismissal of Saif Hassan put the Tigers on the back foot.
But a swift 56-run stand in just 37 balls between stand-in captain Jaker Ali (32 off 25) and Shamim Hossain (33 off 22) dragged Bangladesh back into the game. Jaker was trapped lbw by Rashid Khan, while Shamim’s attempted reverse sweep against Noor Ahmad proved costly, leaving Bangladesh wobbling once again.
The innings then revolved around Nurul Hasan, who remained unbeaten with 31 off 21 balls, displaying calmness under pressure. As wickets tumbled—Nasum Ahmed, Mohammad Saifuddin, and Rishad Hossain falling in quick succession—Bangladesh still needed 19 runs from 13 balls with just two wickets in hand.
Nurul’s audacious six off Noor Ahmad in the 19th over tilted the momentum. Then came the defining moment: left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam, already economical with the ball earlier, struck two boundaries and hit the winning shot. Bangladesh finished on 150-8 in 19.1 overs, sparking celebrations in their dugout.
Afghanistan’s stuttering innings
Earlier, Afghanistan never fully got going after being sent in. Openers Sediqullah Atal (23 off 19) and Ibrahim Zadran (38 off 37) added 55 runs, but the middle overs once again hurt them. Rahmanullah Gurbaz chipped in with 30 off 22, but as Rashid Khan later admitted, their innings lacked a “killer punch.”
A late surge from veterans Azmatullah Omarzai (19* off 17) and Mohammad Nabi (20* off 12) pushed Afghanistan to 147-5, but it always felt slightly below par on Sharjah’s flat wicket.
For Bangladesh, Nasum Ahmed (2-25) and Rishad Hossain (2-45) claimed the bulk of the wickets, but it was Shoriful Islam’s miserly spell of 1-13 in four overs that kept Afghanistan in check and earned him the Player of the Match award.
Series significance
This was Bangladesh’s second straight win in the UAE after they edged Afghanistan by four wickets in the opening T20I. With the series already secured, the Tigers now have a chance to sweep 3-0 in Sunday’s final match.
The victories have showcased Bangladesh’s growing depth in their T20 setup. The middle order—anchored by Shamim Hossain, Jaker Ali, and Nurul Hasan—has shouldered responsibility in tight situations. Shoriful Islam’s emergence as a reliable death bowler has further strengthened the side.
For Afghanistan, Omarzai’s four-wicket haul (4-23) in the second game was a bright spot, while Rashid Khan’s spells remain threatening. Yet their batting continues to falter in middle overs, leaving them vulnerable even when starts are strong.
Bigger picture
The series is part of Bangladesh’s October 2025 tour of the UAE, which also includes three ODIs. Afghanistan, led by Rashid Khan, and Bangladesh, with Jaker Ali captaining in this format, both see the tour as crucial preparation ahead of upcoming ICC tournaments.
While the Tigers have already pocketed the series, Afghanistan will fight to salvage pride in the final game and prevent a whitewash. For Bangladesh, a 3-0 result could mark a significant morale boost and reinforce their status as an increasingly competitive force in T20 cricket on neutral grounds.
