Bangladesh Storm Into SAFF U-17 Final After Blitz Against Pakistan

Early goals from captain Nazmul Huda Faisal and Opu Rahman set the tone as Bangladesh sealed a 2–0 semifinal win over Pakistan to defend regional youth pride.

COLOMBO — Bangladesh’s U-17 side made short work of Pakistan in the first semifinal of the 2025 SAFF U-17 Championship, dispatching them 2–0 at the Racecourse International Stadium to advance to the decider.

Just as the match had barely settled, Bangladesh struck twice in the opening four minutes — a burst of intensity that left Pakistan scrambling and set the tone for what followed.

A Stormy Start

In the 3rd minute, a defensive lapse proved fatal for Pakistan. A misplaced pass toward the back by a defender opened the opportunity; Bangladesh captain Nazmul Huda Faisal pounced on the loose ball, slotting it past goalkeeper Samar Razzak. One minute later, Opu Rahman delivered a stunning left-footed curler from the right flank, threading between two defenders and clipping the far post before settling into the net. Two goals inside four minutes — the kind of opening no team wants to face in a semifinal.

Pakistan attempted to respond. In the 10th minute, Mohammad Abdullah floated in a dangerous corner and met it with a header that drifted just wide. Later in the half, both teams had goals disallowed for offside calls. But Bangladesh’s early cushion allowed them to carry a 2–0 lead into the break.

Maintaining the Grip

The second half saw Bangladesh continue to probe, though the scoring chances were more sporadic. In the 49th minute, Rifat Kazi — who had hit a hat-trick in a previous group-stage match — threatened with a low effort that forced a solid save from Razzak. Shortly after, captain Faisal narrowly missed a chance to extend the lead.

Pakistan mounted several waves of attacks. Substitute Akash Ahmed fired wide in the 80th minute, and Mohammad Wais tested the Bangladeshi defense in the closing moments. But the hosts refused to crack: disciplined, organized, and composed, under the stewardship of coach Golam Rabbani Choton. Bangladesh preserved their clean sheet and their advantage until the final whistle.

Third Straight Final for Bangladesh

This win marks Bangladesh’s third consecutive appearance in the SAFF U-17 final, a run of consistency few regional teams can match. Pakistan, for their part, are eliminated at the semifinal stage for the third straight edition.

Bangladesh had entered the knockout stage on strong footing, having kept clean sheets in all their group matches and racking up emphatic wins. Their momentum carried into the semifinal, and their early goals left Pakistan chasing shadows for much of the match.

In the final, Bangladesh will face either India or Nepal, depending on the result of their semifinal later this evening. The title match is scheduled for 27 September at the same Colombo venue.

Stakes & Outlook

Bangladesh enters the final as serious contenders. Their twin strengths — swift attacking transitions and defensive solidity — have shown up in every game so far. If they play with the same hunger and discipline, they’ll be a formidable adversary for whoever emerges from the India vs Nepal clash.

For Pakistan, the semifinal loss is painful, but their campaign still had high points: a commanding group stage performance and flashes of attacking flair. They will look back, learn, and return hungrier.

In this SAFF youth arena, momentum matters. Bangladesh have it now — but a final is a different beast. They’ll need ice in their veins, confident leadership, and tactical flexibility if they want to lift the trophy.
