The Swindon Bengali Cultural Society in UK has announced its annual Durga Puja celebrations, inviting people of all faiths and backgrounds to join in one of the most vibrant Hindu festivals that celebrates the triumph of good over evil.
Celebration of Faith and Heritage
The festival, which honors Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon king Mahishasura, will begin with Mahalaya on September 21 at the Swindon Hindu Temple, located above Chaat Café in Regent Circus.
On this day, devotees will perform tarpana rituals to pay homage to their ancestors, offer prayers to Goddess Saraswati, and welcome Durga as she is believed to descend from her abode in Kailash.
Detailed Schedule of Events
The second phase begins on September 28 with Maha Shashthi puja at Venue3, Regent Street, starting at 9 pm. Devotees will gather for prayers and enjoy freshly prepared vegetarian Prasad distributed at 10.30 pm.
On September 29, Maha Saptami will feature a spiritual talk on “The Significance of Worship of the Divine Mother,” delivered by Swami Sarvasthananda, Minister-in-Charge of the Ramakrishna Vedanta Centre, and Swami Jnanalokanandaji Maharaj, Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda’s Ancestral House and Trustee of Ramakrishna Math & Mission in Kolkata.
The festival will continue with Maha Ashtami, Maha Nabami, and Bijoya Dashami celebrations beginning each morning at 10 am. Ritual offerings (Pushpanjali) will take place at 1 pm, followed by Prasad at 2 pm. Cultural programs featuring singing and dancing will run from 6 pm, with more Prasad served at 9 pm.
Community Spirit and Support
Organizers including Sumon Roy, Avijit Debnath, Rimon Saha, Jogonnath Saha, Ronojit Saha, Biplob Das, Ripon Saha, Sanjib Das, Amit Chowdhury, Priya Lal, and Amlan Bhoumik said the celebration is not only a spiritual event but also a chance to celebrate Bengali heritage.
“Let us come together to seek the blessings of Maa Durga, celebrate our heritage, and share the warmth of community,” they said in a joint statement.
The organizers also expressed gratitude to Cllr Abdul Amin for helping arrange a fundraising dinner at Lalbagh and thanked advisory members from the Bangladesh Association, Swindon Hindu Temple, and Swindon Puja Committee for their guidance.
