25 Killed in LPG Tanker Explosion in Mexico City

The blast engulfed at least 30 nearby vehicles, leaving 60 others injured.

At least 25 people have been killed and 60 injured after a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanker truck exploded in Mexico City.

The country’s health ministry confirmed the incident in a statement released Friday. The explosion occurred Thursday in Iztapalapa, one of the capital’s most densely populated districts, after the truck — carrying nearly 50,000 liters of LPG — crashed into a boundary wall on a busy road.

The collision triggered a massive explosion and fire, setting ablaze at least 30 nearby vehicles.

Authorities said 10 victims died on the spot, while 15 others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospitals. Twenty-one people remain hospitalized, several in critical condition, while 38 others have been treated and discharged.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was caused by the driver’s lack of skill and excessive speed,” the ministry said.
