York County, Pa. — Three police officers were shot and killed, and two others were wounded Wednesday afternoon in York County, according to Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris.
Authorities confirmed that the shooter, whose identity has not yet been released, was killed by law enforcement. Paris said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The incident began around 2:10 p.m. as officers attempted to serve a warrant related to a domestic incident from the previous day. Additional details are being withheld while investigators obtain and execute search warrants.
> “There are no words I can offer to ease the grief this community is feeling,” Paris said at a press conference held at WellSpan York Hospital. “We stand united. We will not rest until a full, fair, and thorough investigation is completed.”
Governor Josh Shapiro, joined by Lt. Gov. Austin Davis, called the shootings “absolutely devastating” and urged action on mental health and violence prevention.
> “We need to do better when it comes to helping people who think picking up a weapon is the answer,” Shapiro said. “We have to do better as a society.”
Emergency Response
911 dispatch logs described the situation as “officer down” with a “signal 13” — code for an officer in trouble. Two of the wounded officers were transported with multiple gunshot wounds, requiring medevac helicopters and ambulances.
The shooting led to a temporary shelter-in-place order for the Spring Grove School District. Students were later released and taken home by bus.
Police blocked off roads in the rural area, where some 30 law enforcement vehicles surrounded a property near a barn, goat farm, and corn and soybean fields.
Ongoing Investigation
York County District Attorney Tim Barker said more information will be released as the investigation continues. Federal agencies, including the FBI and ATF, are assisting local authorities.
The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia issued a precautionary alert, urging Mexican residents nearby to follow official instructions.
Lt. Gov. Austin Davis asked the public on social media to “please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting.”
Governor Shapiro also referenced the February death of Officer Andrew Duarte, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a hostage situation at York Memorial Hospital.
> “This is a painful day for York County and the entire Commonwealth,” Shapiro said.
