After Israeli Attack, Trump Advises Qatar to Remain Cautious

Last Friday in New York, Trump had dinner with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani. According to the deputy chief of mission of the Qatari embassy, the meeting was “very successful.”

After the Israeli attack in Doha, U.S. President Donald Trump praised America’s relationship with Qatar but warned that the Gulf country must remain politically cautious. He also urged Israel to be careful with its attacks.

According to a TRT World report on Monday (15 September), U.S. President Donald Trump praised the U.S.-Qatar relationship following the Israeli strike in Doha. Calling Qatar a “great ally,” he said that, due to its geographical location, the country needs to be “somewhat politically cautious.”

Speaking to reporters on his way back to the White House from Morristown, New Jersey, on Sunday, Trump said, “Qatar is a great ally of ours. They are going through a very difficult situation because they are geographically at the center of everything. So, even in their choice of words, they must be somewhat politically cautious. But I can say that they have remained a great ally of the United States.”

Answering a journalist’s question, Trump also urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be careful regarding the attack in Doha.
He said, “So everyone, including Israel, must be careful. When we strike, it is necessary to be cautious.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes in Doha targeted top Hamas leaders. Five Hamas members and one Qatari security officer were killed in the attack, sparking strong condemnation across the region and internationally.

Previously, Trump had expressed anger at Israel over the attack in Qatar. He said that such unilateral actions do not serve the interests of either the United States or Israel. He also said that he had instructed his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to warn Qatar.

Qatar, however, said that they were only warned during the attack itself, when Hamas leaders were in Doha discussing a new U.S. proposal to end the war in Gaza.

Since October 2023, nearly 65,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli operations in Gaza.

Meanwhile, the attack in Doha has made efforts to achieve a ceasefire even more complicated. Qatar has been playing a key role — along with the U.S. and Egypt — as a principal mediator to end the war in Gaza.
